Hidden Champions in Kazakhstan

Hidden champions are relatively small but highly successful companies, that often show rapid growth. The term was coined by the Founder and Honorary Chairman of Simon-Kucher, Professor Hermann Simon. He first used the term as a title of a publication in a German management journal, describing the small, highly specialized world-market leaders in Germany. According to his definition, a company must meet three criteria to be considered a hidden champion:
- Number one, two, or three in the global market, or number one on the company's continent, determined by market share
- Revenue below $5 billion
- Low level of public awareness

While a high proportion of these come from the German-speaking Mittelstand, there are a lot of highly profitable, relatively small and mostly unknown companies originating in many countries around the world. These companies are world leaders in what they do, but they are also very private and all too often their many innovations and achievements go unnoticed.

Presentation Abstract:
Companies across the world, including those of Kazakhstan, strive for transparency, development, and innovation. Yet, the market share, internationalization aspect, and market visibility may not always mean hidden champion status. We often met with a paradox when a company was innovative, successful, and rapidly developing, and yet, due to a certain factor (i.e., being a national company or not hidden), it could not be included in the research. In other words, if it was innovative and international, but a small company, it had to be dropped from the hidden champion list. Also, a hidden champion must be a regional leader, but not too well-known to the market. Meanwhile, in Kazakhstan and the Central Asian region, big companies are mostly well-known.The presentation of Hidden Champions in Kazakhstan is structured in 3 parts. Firstly, we will give a brief overview of Kazakhstan (history, geographics, economics). Secondly, we will introduce the 2019 Hidden Champions, and thirdly, we will present challenges and opportunities for future Hidden Champions in Kazakhstan.
